THE CHALLENGE
Scale delivery of the patient portal and electronic medical records (EMR) application
The Covid-19 pandemic challenged hospitals in obvious and unexpected ways. On one hand, the influx of Covid patients and the scarcity of basic personal protection equipment (PPE) placed extraordinary demands on hospital staff.
On the other hand, an immediate reduction in elective surgeries cut off hospital revenue at the source – leading to layoffs and cost-cutting throughout the healthcare industry.
Healthcare digitization began long before the pandemic, but the urgency increased during quarantine as patients expected easy access to virtual care and digital health records.
To meet these needs, one of Leapwork’s customers – a major healthcare operator responsible for 178 hospitals and over 1,900 sites of care – needed to scale delivery of their patient portal and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) application.
The patient portal contains information about a patient’s care plans, including prescription details and procedures; while the EMR application is relied on by physicians and office staff to access patient data, manage care, and prescribe medication. It is therefore essential that data accuracy is preserved, and the systems work as expected – always.
THE SOLUTION
Automate functional testing of the portal and EMR application
Leapwork enabled the automation of functional testing for the patient portal and EMR application, ensuring data accuracy and patient security. By using an intuitive no-code platform, the team was able to quickly implement tests across various browsers and devices, reducing the need for manual testing and enabling more efficient scaling. This approach allowed for faster and more reliable issue identification, while freeing up time for exploratory work and further automation.

A previous attempt with Selenium failed to provide the required transparency or scalability, so this healthcare operator sought a solution that was capable of testing across browsers and devices, was easy for testers to use, but also powerful enough for technical experts to dive deeper where necessary.
With Leapwork in place, the operator has successfully automated functional tests for both the patient portal and EMR application. This has enabled QA efforts to match the need for faster development cycles and a growing demand for smarter digital services.
